Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to have a doula attend a birth?
A birthing doula package starts at about $500 while some doulas charge over $1000. This depends on experience and the amount of time the doula will spend with you before and after the birth. On the other hand, some doulas are willing to negotiate costs in special circumstances. The doulas listed on findadoula.com.au have their own rates so please contact them to confirm costs.
I would like a doula. What’s the first step?
Use the search interface here to find a doula in your area who is available around your due date. Read the doula profiles, contact the doula/s that suit you and make a time to meet so you can see whether they suit you and your family. This initial meeting doesn’t cost anything and carries no obligations at all. It is recommended that you make doula meetings in a public place such as a cafĂ©, until such time as you know and trust this person.
I can’t afford a qualified doula. How can I find a doula-in-training?
Doulas-in-training are required to attend three or more “training” births during their course, at no cost to the birthing couple. They may just ask that you cover their travel expenses. You will also be asked to fill in feedback forms as part of their assessment and you may be called by their tutor. Just be aware that you may have a trainee on her very first birth, which comes with the territory. Feel free to be choosey – you should have the right doula for you, regardless of the free offer. The doula profiles on this website will say whether a doula is certified or in training.
